New RI United Way fund gets $500,000 for Flood Victims

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- In just one day, the United Way of Rhode Island has attracted at least $500,000 in contributions to a new Rhode Island Flood Recovery Fund aimed at meeting needs not covered by federal government programs or private insurance.

Donors include Amgen, the Rhode Island Foundation, and the United Way itself, which each contributed $100,000 to the fund. Brown University contributed $50,000.

Other contributors include Amica Insurance, $35,000, and FM Global and Cox Communications, $25,000 each; National Grid and Textron, $20,000 each; Washington Trust, $15,000, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island, $10,000. Cox Communications is also donating $25,000 in in-kind contributions.

The fund will not distribute money to individuals but will work with established social service agencies that have a track record in disaster relief, according to Anthony Maione, CEO and president of the United Way.

For example, he said, the fund would assist a community action program that has run out of money to pay the bill for displaced families staying in hotels.

A committee of community leaders will determine how the money will be spent, Maione said. He said the United Way's $100,000 contribution will go toward a dollar-for-dollar match of individual donations.

FM Global is prepared to give $2 for every dollar donated by an employee, in addition to its no-strings donation of $25,000, according to the United Way.

Individuals may donate online at http://www.liveunitedri.org and clicking on the "Donate Now" button.

Checks may be made payable to the United Way. Reference the Rhode Island Flood Recovery Fund on the check and mail it to:
