ABOUT THE GRANTMAKERS COUNCIL OF RHODE ISLAND

We are pleased to introduce to the Grantmakers Council of Rhode Island, Inc. (GCRI), a new membership organization created to support an environment for knowledge sharing and collegial networking among funders.

Several key grantmakers in Rhode Island formed GCRI as a result of the expressed need for skill building workshops, roundtables and forums specifically focused on the issues affecting Rhode Island. GCRI provides private, corporate foundations, corporate giving programs, and individuals with organized grantmaking programs or charitable endowments, with a unique opportunity to share a vision for learning and working together.

Today, GCRI has more than 30 member organizations. Each month, a program is held on various issues from affordable housing and health care to grantmaking and effective program evaluation. The purpose of the meetings is to provide information and education to members that will help them become more effective grantmakers. For a complete list of member benefits please visit the "how to join" area of this website.

GCRI is a member of the Forum of the Regional Association of Grant Makers. As such, GCRI participates in the roles of the Association:

The Roles of Regional Associations of Grantmakers

A regional association is a staffed organization with a defined governance and financial structure that serves grantmakers in a metropolitan area, a single state or a multi-state region. Its membership includes a variety of grantmaking institutions and programs.

The 30 regional associations in the United States constitute a federation called the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers.

The Forum strongly encourages and directly helps all of its regional association members to embrace five basic roles as they in turn serve philanthropy in their service areas:

  1. To deliver educational resources that strengthen the effectiveness of their members in governance, finance and administration, grantmaking and communications.
  2. To support networking opportunities among grantmakers and between grantmakers and grantseekers.
  3. To serve as an informational resource about organized philanthropy for potential and current donors, and the general public.
  4. To communicate the value of regional philanthropy to state policymakers, the public and the media.
  5. To sustain and support a membership of organized grantmakers and to aspire to represent the majority of endowed philanthropic assets in its service area.
